Qualifications for Jobs in Early Childhood Education

The field of early childhood education needs people who are committed towards meeting the social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs of young children. Working in early childhood education is more than just a job, it is a career.

If you are pondering potential jobs in early childhood education, you will need to make sure you are fully qualified. There are two types of qualifications to consider; what you bring into the field both personally and professionally.

Personal Qualifications

To determine if you are a good fit in the field of early childhood education, inventory your person characteristics…

  • Do you have a passion for the best interest of young children?
  • Do you have a passion for education?
  • Are you able to demonstrate love, compassion, concern, empathy, and enthusiasm towards all young children regardless of their background, income, culture, race, or disability?
  • Are you patient, forgiving, honest, energetic, creative, and loving?
  • Do you mind singing, playing games, sitting on the floor, or holding a child’s hand?
  • Can you cheerfully handle changing a diaper, wiping a runny nose, wiping up spilled milk, tying tiny shoes, and zipping up jackets and sweaters?
  • Can you care about the needs of the whole child and his or her family?

These are just some of the personal characteristics necessary to be an asset to any early childhood program. If you answered yes to these questions, then you are more than likely a good fit for potential jobs in early childhood education.

Professional Qualifications

To determine if you are professionally ready for a career in early childhood education, consider the following…

  • Do you have experience meeting the needs of young children?
  • Do you have experience working with a large group of young children?
  • Have you attended training, seminars, or conferences in early childhood education?
  • Are you a member of early childhood associations or special interest groups?
  • Do you have certifications or are you willing to obtain certifications in early childhood education?
  • Have you completed a degree in early childhood education or are you willing to enroll in college level early childhood courses?

Longevity

One of the most important things to consider is your willingness to commit to the field of early childhood education for the long-term. Young children need consistency in their lives and each time a teacher quits the field, it breaks the bond and trust each child has come to depend on.

When considering jobs in early childhood education, be sure to evaluate your personal and professional goals. Should early childhood education be right for you – then make the commitment for the long-term and you will find the field of early childhood education to be a rewarding career.
