BusinessWeek Chief Economist Michael Mandel states: “When you look at a house you may not see its foundation. But that’s what holds it up. And if the foundation of a house is cracked, you have to fix it – even if it means skimping on other things” (Davis, 2009, para 1). What Mandel is talking about is the vital role of early childhood education in the economic future.

As the value of early childhood education becomes more vivid in the minds of politicians, business leaders, and educators, the demand for highly educated early childhood professionals will only increase. “Research shows that effective early childhood education – i.e., the schooling of children prior to age six – significantly affects the children’s intelligence as they grow and develop into functioning adults” (Davis, 2009, para 6). With this in mind, now is the time for those interested in a career in early childhood education to get prepared.

If you are currently working in the field of early childhood education or are considering a career in early childhood education, you will want to make sure you arm yourself with the tools necessary to be successful in the field. An online degree in early childhood education is one way to get started in the right direction.

There are many universities that now offer an online early childhood degree program. After receiving your associate, bachelors, or master degree in early childhood education, you will discover many doors of opportunity within the field. If you are considering an online degree, be sure to look for an accredited university with a solid reputation. If you are currently working in early childhood education, find out if your school has a program to help pay for your education.

Early childhood education sets the foundation for tomorrow’s future leaders and early childhood educators play a critical role in providing quality care and best practices in education to the young children placed in their care.

If you have enrolled in an early childhood education online degree program then you have conquered the first step towards completing your online early childhood education degree. If you haven’t enrolled yet then here is a bonus tip – don’t wait for someone to tell you that it is a good idea, you have to make the choice and just get started.

Tip Number One!

Just because and early childhood education degree program is for those of you working with young children, it doesn’t mean the classes will be easy. To successfully complete an early childhood education degree online you must first be a serious student with the drive to invest yourself towards achieving professional excellence.

Tip Number Two!

Make sure you have the tools for success. You will need a computer and access to a reliable internet connection. You will also need to find out what software will be needed to complete your online courses and make sure you have the latest versions. In addition, you will probably need a printer at first so to print out the class syllabus and some of the class readings or assignments. It often takes time to get adjusted to doing all of the readings from a computer monitor.

Tip Number Three!

Stay connected to an early childhood program. Courses designed for an early childhood education online degree will often require you to apply concepts to real life situations or to draw ideas from real life situations. Fortunately, completing an online degree allows the flexibility to keep a full time job and still go to school.

Tip Number Four!

Set goals and make getting your online education degree a priority. Plan time for research and study and ask family members and friends to support you by giving you a little space to focus on your assigned work.

Tip Number Five!

Throughout your educational experience, you will run into all kinds of people. Some of your fellow students may really click with you and others may rub you the wrong way. In either case, remember to keep your focus solidly on the goal of achieving a degree. It is easy to get caught up in fretting over whether someone is nice to you or not which burns valuable time and emotional energy. Protect your time and emotional energy by maintaining your focus on completing assignments and getting an online early childhood education degree.

Tip Number Six!

An early childhood education degree completed in the online university forum brings with it unique challenges in the ability to communicate well. Take time to review all of your comments made in the online forum for grammar, punctuation, clarity, tone, and conciseness. Double checking your words before pressing send will prevent misunderstandings and stressful situations.

Tip Number Seven!

Don’t overdo it by trying to take two to three online classes all at one time. Online courses are designed to cover large amounts of material in a fairly short amount of time. Taking too many classes all at one time can cause you to quickly burn out. Burn-out leads to drop-out so take the pressure off and take one class at a time until you have fully completed your early childhood education degree.

Tip Number Eight!

At the beginning of every online education course, take the time to download the course syllabus and read it carefully. Print it and highlight all the essentials and if you need clarification, just ask. Follow the guidelines for attendance, participation, and assignment expectations fully.

Bookmark & Share

If you are planning to enroll in online early childhood education courses, then you will want to have a plan for how to find the resources you need to fulfill the course requirements.

Online Resources

One of the best places to look for early childhood educational resources is through an online search. An online search can produce an abundance of material including…

Academic articles for writing research papers

News articles for keeping up with current trends and issues in the field of early childhood education

Biographies and historical records of important people and theories in early childhood education

Academic standards and models of curriculum in early childhood education

Early Childhood Education associations and networking groups

A wealth of websites that offer suggestions for creating lesson plans and designing classroom environments.

Blogs written by seasoned early childhood professionals on topics such as children’s books, teacher training and techniques, parent communication, and classroom management.

When using online resources in your papers or discussions, be sure to check the credibility of the website or author you intend to cite as a resource. Check the university standards on what is or is not considered a credible resource for your assigned course work.

Childcare or Preschool Resources

If you are enrolled in early childhood education classes, you will also want to have access to a local preschool or childcare. Many of your online education courses will require you to apply learning concepts to a real life school setting. Other online education classes will require you to gather information from a real life school setting. It is best if you are already working in a local preschool or childcare center while attending online education.

Library Resources

Universities with a well established online educational program will offer their students access to an online library or a campus library. The library is where you will find peer reviewed articles necessary to provide credibility to your research and written assignments.

Professional Resources

Start networking early with other early childhood professionals as well as professionals involved in related fields such as childcare owners and directors, child therapists, child healthcare workers, school counselors, and child social service workers. Many assignments in online education courses will require you to conduct interviews of other professionals in the early childhood field as well as professionals in related fields. Find out who knows who so that when the time comes, you will be able to find the professionals you need to produce quality research and interviews.

Give Credit Where Credit is Due

Along with using resources for your written work is the responsibility of giving appropriate credit for the work of another. If you quote, paraphrase, or rely heavily on a resource to complete your coursework, be sure to cite your sources and include them in the reference section of your paper. Use resources wisely and effectively but in the end, apply your own ideas as you fulfill the requirements provided by your early childhood education courses.

Many questions come with deciding to get an early childhood education degree. Childhood education degrees come in many forms and what you can expect will vary upon the type of degree and the courses you choose. Researching different early childhood courses is the best way to figure out which direction to take and also the best way to discover outcomes that follow graduation.

The first five years of a child’s life are the most important and formative when it comes down to their development. The needs of pre-schoolers are now one of the top priorities in education. After completing an early childhood education online degree, your prospects are excellent. You can find work in many different areas of the industry – from nursery schools, and the public school system to infant, toddle day care centers.

There are lots of different early childhood courses you can consider when pursuing an early childhood education degree even though the technicalities of the course are always similar. Usually, your early childhood training will be broken down into semesters and coursework.

One of the best things about earning early childhood education degree online is the sheer flexibility of it. By taking early childhood education classes online you are already eliminating the time it takes to travel back and forth to the college. Thankfully, this means that you can expect your training to take a lot less time than you think because the only time you spend is working.

Whether you’re starting afresh and going in a new career direction or even simply wanting to improve your current career, online degrees are a great way to do this. You will learn up-to-date information and you can expect to receive lots of help. Just because you are learning online doesn’t mean you have to go it alone – with ability to contact tutors and to watch lectures on demand instead of relying on notes, you can’t go wrong.

One of the most reassuring things to expect is the control you have of your early childhood education training. You can pause a video and come back to it later on if you wish and catch up on things you’ve missed.

The settings are different for different courses and colleges. Some colleges require you to log on at certain times to do course work, but some others just require you to log on for two to five hours a week as a minimum. It all depends on the Early Childhood Education degree you choose to take.

The professional career of a teacher is a high-responsibility role. Teachers have to ensure that the academic development of the children in their class is consistent each year. Also, teachers need to help their children learn the right things in the right way. With early childhood education in particular, there is a need for creativity and for the learning to be exciting. It can be a demanding job and you may need a lot of patience to pull it off.

There are five main steps to becoming an early childhood educator. These start from the very beginning where you are deciding what courses you would like to take, right through to getting your degree and taking certification tests. It can sound complicated at first, but when it’s all laid out it can be pretty simple. You may choose to attend university classes or complete your early childhood education online.
When you decide this career path you have to choose what kind of teacher to be and you areas of interest so that you can specialize in that subject. For example, if you want to become an early childhood educator, you could pick either to train at day care centre, kindergarten, or elementary school level. You have many opportunities at your disposal.

After you make this decision, you will begin working with your targeted group. One of the main things you need to become an educator is work experience for the course you have chosen. Short stints in local schools can help. This provide insight into what your job will be like once you’ve graduated from your course. This could include being a teacher, a teacher’s aide or a carer.

Once you have some experience, then you can study for a bachelor’s degree. This is one of the most important qualifications that you can achieve to become an early childhood educator and you will receive this once you have spent four years in a college or university that offers classes in the speciality that you intend to teach. There are some teaching education programs which will aid your skills and techniques on how to manage a classroom.

Working as a student teacher is the next step. Students who have enrolled these teaching programs will take part in teaching internships in order to become further involved in their work and gain more credentials as a teacher.

The final step is to take teacher certification tests. Most of the states have requirements for their teachers to pass a certification exam after they have finished their courses at college or university so parents can be assured that you reach teaching standards.

Once these steps are complete, you will be well trained in early childhood education and ready to make a difference in children’s lives.

When you decide to become a part of a child’s early education, how do you know which online courses are right for you?

If you take an online bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, you will be trained on how to teach children from the very first stages of education and support from birth to the age of five. An early childhood education degree provides core courses in education and child development which will create a wide range of knowledge that you can apply in your career.

In order to complete the online bachelor’s degree course, students are required to complete and accredit about 120 hours of work, according to Park University. In this time, students must demonstrate their understanding via message boards, email, online educational video streams and class notes. These skills are expected in some courses to earn an undergraduate online degree. If you are not too good with computers, getting some basic training in their usage could help.

A Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, focuses on topics such as teaching strategies, a child’s stages of development, curriculum models, theories of early childhoood education, and building relationships with families of the students you teach. These are examples of the types of subjects you should expect to be covered while you are completing your course work.

Some of the online degree courses allow each student to custom-make their own desired degree and create the itinerary that is right for them. This allows them to stick to their interests and to also cut out all of the subjects of which they do not want to learn as of yet.

Students who earn an Early Childhood Education degree can decide on whether or not to specialize in alternative education or go into child development, like the University of Massachusetts-Amherst suggests.

Despite the consequences of wanting to choose the specialization route, Park University has said that students who are earning a bachelor’s degree online in Early Childhood Education should take other topics like child growth and development, educational technology, childrens’ literature and many more. By taking these additional courses, you will ensure you are fully educated on all possible aspects of the education system.

Once you have chosen and have enrolled in your early childhood education course, you may find that you are required to complete a practicum, which is more commonly known as a student teaching period. In the online education world, it is hard for this to be achieved over the web so students will be expected to arrange and complete this task offline. This can be done by making arrangements with a local school. You will need to student-teach while under the supervision of a fully-trained and qualified teacher, to complete your practicum. Doing this, you will gain a hands-on feel for your subject, and it will help you on the journey to your graduation.

Running a search for the degree you are interested in on Google can be a great start.
There are many useful websites that can help you on your quest including the online Degree Directory website. In addition, you can find out other vital information like the cost of enrollment, the outcome of the course and an idea how much commitment such a course would take.

Many university websites also provide the contact details of the tutors who lead students in studying for the degree. Talking to them could help you voice your concerns and also get a grasp of any online programs that you may be expected to use.

When you are deciding on how to studying early childhood education online, there are many different aspects of courses that you should brush up on before committing to a distance education degree.

A Ph.D. is the most acclaimed degree which is offered by universities and it is the highest form of education qualification that most of them offer. The name comes as an abbreviation of Latin and when translated into English means ‘teacher of Philosophy’.

Deciding to pursue an early childhood education online degree with a Ph.D. usually means going through the normal coursework processes and with more extensive examinations.

The next step down from the Ph.D. is the Master’s degree, which is the typical qualification level for many early childhood education online degrees. Theoretical and applied knowledge is tested and many students are expected to participate in problem-solving activities.

Many people who study Master’s degrees are continuing on from a Bachelor’s degree. Bachelor’s degrees are another popular study option for graduates who seek to study early childhood education – with courses usually lasting four years.

Education decisions do not end here. Once you have decided on the level to which to study, it is time to consider the focus of the learning that you want to involve in.

Some focuses that are common for early childhood education degrees online include social sciences which include a significant amount of research.

If you embark on a social sciences degree, which would be included in your main qualification, you would find that you would be expected to analyse many different social situations: some of them problems and dilemmas.

A social sciences degree can be beneficial if you are considering going into a managerial role as an early childhood educator. You will gain expert knowledge on how to improve the lives of young children and the groups they are in, most educators find the opportunity to study from a different perspective refreshing.

There are some online education classes which also build in an element of vocational work, too. Vocational work is when you have the opportunity to try some hands-on work with young children whilst you engage in your studies to achieve your ultimate goal.

If you still find yourself stumped, there are some things you can do to find out more. Many universities have a full description of what courses entail on their websites and there are many tutors who would be more than happy to give you advice on what they believe would be most suited to your interests.

If you really want to become an early childhood educator, there is no doubt that using an online education degree program could help you achieve your goals.

Many universities have facilities which enable you to talk to your tutors, where you can obtain some very valuable tips and advice during your learning.

Sometimes, it is your fellow students who can give you valuable insight when studying. There can be times where you may have found that you have missed something when writing your essay, and this is when talking to your fellow students can help or even forming a study group. Even talking to someone who is further on in the course when compared to the stage of your learning could be an idea to consider.

When you are writing your coursework for your early childhood education classes, you will have to apply knowledge of practical and theoretical teaching practices. This can be where talking to teachers in your local area can help.
Visiting a local elementary school and even requesting for a day or two of work experience there could help you to obtain incredibly valuable experience for when you need to apply your knowledge in an essay.

While you are there, you will be able to analize how teachers and their aides communicate and teach children, as well as look at how ethical issues like discipline, race and special needs children are handled.

When you are writing an essay, the last thing you want to do is suffer in silence and to go through it all alone. This article has looked at just some of the ways that you can get support through your education and training.

Taking the initiative to ask around and probe further into early childhood education when embarking on your online degree education could be more useful than you think.
