BusinessWeek Chief Economist Michael Mandel states: “When you look at a house you may not see its foundation. But that’s what holds it up. And if the foundation of a house is cracked, you have to fix it – even if it means skimping on other things” (Davis, 2009, para 1). What Mandel is talking about is the vital role of early childhood education in the economic future.

As the value of early childhood education becomes more vivid in the minds of politicians, business leaders, and educators, the demand for highly educated early childhood professionals will only increase. “Research shows that effective early childhood education – i.e., the schooling of children prior to age six – significantly affects the children’s intelligence as they grow and develop into functioning adults” (Davis, 2009, para 6). With this in mind, now is the time for those interested in a career in early childhood education to get prepared.

If you are currently working in the field of early childhood education or are considering a career in early childhood education, you will want to make sure you arm yourself with the tools necessary to be successful in the field. An online degree in early childhood education is one way to get started in the right direction.

There are many universities that now offer an online early childhood degree program. After receiving your associate, bachelors, or master degree in early childhood education, you will discover many doors of opportunity within the field. If you are considering an online degree, be sure to look for an accredited university with a solid reputation. If you are currently working in early childhood education, find out if your school has a program to help pay for your education.

Early childhood education sets the foundation for tomorrow’s future leaders and early childhood educators play a critical role in providing quality care and best practices in education to the young children placed in their care.

If you have enrolled in an early childhood education online degree program then you have conquered the first step towards completing your online early childhood education degree. If you haven’t enrolled yet then here is a bonus tip – don’t wait for someone to tell you that it is a good idea, you have to make the choice and just get started.

Tip Number One!

Just because and early childhood education degree program is for those of you working with young children, it doesn’t mean the classes will be easy. To successfully complete an early childhood education degree online you must first be a serious student with the drive to invest yourself towards achieving professional excellence.

Tip Number Two!

Make sure you have the tools for success. You will need a computer and access to a reliable internet connection. You will also need to find out what software will be needed to complete your online courses and make sure you have the latest versions. In addition, you will probably need a printer at first so to print out the class syllabus and some of the class readings or assignments. It often takes time to get adjusted to doing all of the readings from a computer monitor.

Tip Number Three!

Stay connected to an early childhood program. Courses designed for an early childhood education online degree will often require you to apply concepts to real life situations or to draw ideas from real life situations. Fortunately, completing an online degree allows the flexibility to keep a full time job and still go to school.

Tip Number Four!

Set goals and make getting your online education degree a priority. Plan time for research and study and ask family members and friends to support you by giving you a little space to focus on your assigned work.

Tip Number Five!

Throughout your educational experience, you will run into all kinds of people. Some of your fellow students may really click with you and others may rub you the wrong way. In either case, remember to keep your focus solidly on the goal of achieving a degree. It is easy to get caught up in fretting over whether someone is nice to you or not which burns valuable time and emotional energy. Protect your time and emotional energy by maintaining your focus on completing assignments and getting an online early childhood education degree.

Tip Number Six!

An early childhood education degree completed in the online university forum brings with it unique challenges in the ability to communicate well. Take time to review all of your comments made in the online forum for grammar, punctuation, clarity, tone, and conciseness. Double checking your words before pressing send will prevent misunderstandings and stressful situations.

Tip Number Seven!

Don’t overdo it by trying to take two to three online classes all at one time. Online courses are designed to cover large amounts of material in a fairly short amount of time. Taking too many classes all at one time can cause you to quickly burn out. Burn-out leads to drop-out so take the pressure off and take one class at a time until you have fully completed your early childhood education degree.

Tip Number Eight!

At the beginning of every online education course, take the time to download the course syllabus and read it carefully. Print it and highlight all the essentials and if you need clarification, just ask. Follow the guidelines for attendance, participation, and assignment expectations fully.

Bookmark & Share

If you are planning to enroll in online early childhood education courses, then you will want to have a plan for how to find the resources you need to fulfill the course requirements.

Online Resources

One of the best places to look for early childhood educational resources is through an online search. An online search can produce an abundance of material including…

Academic articles for writing research papers

News articles for keeping up with current trends and issues in the field of early childhood education

Biographies and historical records of important people and theories in early childhood education

Academic standards and models of curriculum in early childhood education

Early Childhood Education associations and networking groups

A wealth of websites that offer suggestions for creating lesson plans and designing classroom environments.

Blogs written by seasoned early childhood professionals on topics such as children’s books, teacher training and techniques, parent communication, and classroom management.

When using online resources in your papers or discussions, be sure to check the credibility of the website or author you intend to cite as a resource. Check the university standards on what is or is not considered a credible resource for your assigned course work.

Childcare or Preschool Resources

If you are enrolled in early childhood education classes, you will also want to have access to a local preschool or childcare. Many of your online education courses will require you to apply learning concepts to a real life school setting. Other online education classes will require you to gather information from a real life school setting. It is best if you are already working in a local preschool or childcare center while attending online education.

Library Resources

Universities with a well established online educational program will offer their students access to an online library or a campus library. The library is where you will find peer reviewed articles necessary to provide credibility to your research and written assignments.

Professional Resources

Start networking early with other early childhood professionals as well as professionals involved in related fields such as childcare owners and directors, child therapists, child healthcare workers, school counselors, and child social service workers. Many assignments in online education courses will require you to conduct interviews of other professionals in the early childhood field as well as professionals in related fields. Find out who knows who so that when the time comes, you will be able to find the professionals you need to produce quality research and interviews.

Give Credit Where Credit is Due

Along with using resources for your written work is the responsibility of giving appropriate credit for the work of another. If you quote, paraphrase, or rely heavily on a resource to complete your coursework, be sure to cite your sources and include them in the reference section of your paper. Use resources wisely and effectively but in the end, apply your own ideas as you fulfill the requirements provided by your early childhood education courses.

Many questions come with deciding to get an early childhood education degree. Childhood education degrees come in many forms and what you can expect will vary upon the type of degree and the courses you choose. Researching different early childhood courses is the best way to figure out which direction to take and also the best way to discover outcomes that follow graduation.

The first five years of a child’s life are the most important and formative when it comes down to their development. The needs of pre-schoolers are now one of the top priorities in education.
There are lots of different early childhood courses you can consider when pursuing an early childhood education degree even though the technicalities of the course are always similar. Usually, your early childhood training will be broken down into semesters and coursework.

One of the best things about earning early childhood education degree online is the sheer flexibility of it. By taking early childhood education classes online you are already eliminating the time it takes to travel back and forth to the college. Thankfully, this means that you can expect your training to take a lot less time than you think because the only time you spend is working.

You will learn up-to-date information and you can expect to receive lots of help. Just because you are learning online doesn’t mean you have to go it alone – with ability to contact tutors and to watch lectures on demand instead of relying on notes, you can’t go wrong.

One of the most reassuring things to expect is the control you have of your early childhood education training. You can pause a video and come back to it later on if you wish and catch up on things you’ve missed.

The settings are different for different courses and colleges. Some colleges require you to log on at certain times to do course work, but some others just require you to log on for two to five hours a week as a minimum. It all depends on the Early Childhood Education degree you choose to take.

So: you’ve decided to take the next step in your career and would like to study for an early childhood education degree. The question you need to ask yourself is: what next?

Here we’ll look closely at what you can do to ensure that you pick the right distance education degree online for you.

Running a search for the degree you are interested in on Google can be a great start. If you are choosing to study your chosen course from a long distance, you can choose more or less any university in America that provides distance-learning facilities.

There are many useful websites that can help you on your quest including the online Degree Directory website. On this website, you have the opportunity to search for your courses by topic, qualification level and by state. There are also frequently asked question pages if you need more help.

When you have found potential matches for your online degree in early childhood education, go to the official website of the university. There, you should be able to find a full synopsis and description of what will be expected when you take this course. In addition, you can find out other vital information like the cost of enrollment, the outcome of the course and an idea how much commitment such a course would take.

Many university websites also provide the contact details of the tutors who lead students in studying for the degree. Talking to them could help you voice your concerns and also get a grasp of any online programs that you may be expected to use.

Sometimes, there’s nothing better than talking to people who have already been through the courses and studied the material. You can find out first-hand the experiences of people, like yourself.

Another place you can find comments is on a forum which specializes in offering a community for people who are considering taking online courses, are taking them and have already completed their degree. This Online Degree Forum can help you to make an informed decision.

If you aren’t afraid to put in the time to research different options, you should have no trouble in finding the right distance education degree online.
